The drug is a representative of cyclopyrrolones, a new class of psychotropic drugs, structurally different from benzodiazepines and barbiturates. The sedative-hypnotic effect of zopiclone is due to its high affinity to binding sites in the GAMK receptor complex in the central nervous system.
