Microplastics are one of the most serious environmentalthreats of the 21st century. This article examines the history of the problem of environmentalpollution with microplastics, the main stages of its study, as well as modernresearch devoted to the detection of microplastics in aquatic ecosystems, soil,atmosphere and in the human body. Particular attention is paid to the beginning ofmicroplastic research in Central Asia and Uzbekistan, where this issue has not yet beensufficiently studied. An overview of the sources of microplastic pollution, itsconsequences for the environment and possible strategies for reducing the negativeimpact is presented. The results obtained confirm the need for furtherresearch in the field of microplastic monitoring and the development of methods for itselimination.
