Ultrasound diagnostics (US) is a standard of obstetric practice, but its biophysical effects, including thermal and mechanical effects, raise questions about safety for fetal tissues, including red bone marrow. This review systematizes data on the physical and biological basis of ultrasound, the characteristics of fetal hematopoiesis, and clinical safety. Experimental studies indicate potential subcellular effects of ultrasound on hematopoietic stem cells at high-intensity parameters.
