The total hardness of water remains one of the main parameters determining its quality and application in various fields. The article is devoted to the analysis of the total hardness of water, including its chemical nature, modern measurement methods and approaches to controlling this indicator. Special attention is paid to new water treatment technologies, their environmental and economic efficiency, as well as the impact of water hardness on health and production processes. Based on the analysis of the literature, current problems and prospects for research in the field of water hardness regulation are identified.
